When Should You Book Your Newborn Photoshoot in Newcastle?
Pregnancy has a funny way of feeling both endlessly long and startlingly short at the same time. One moment you're telling family at Christmas, and the next you're counting down weeks on your fingers. Somewhere in amongst the scans, the nesting, and the growing list of things to organise, newborn photography often ends up further down the to-do list than it should be.
It's completely understandable. When you're not sure exactly how it all works, it can feel easier to leave it until after your baby arrives. But as a newborn photographer based in Newcastle upon Tyne, one of the most common messages I receive is from parents who have just had their baby and are hoping to book - only to find that the window they needed has already passed.
This post is here to take the mystery out of the process. Whether you're newly pregnant, approaching your third trimester, or you've just come home from the hospital and are wondering if it's too late — I hope this answers everything you need to know.
When Is the Best Time for Newborn Photos?
The ideal age for a newborn session is between five and fourteen days old. This is true across most professional newborn photography and there are good reasons for it.
In those early days, babies tend to sleep more deeply and curl naturally into the snug, compact positions that make newborn images so beautifully peaceful. Their skin is soft and new, their features are still unmistakably fresh, and they don't yet have long wakeful periods that make settling them for a session trickier later on.
Within my Newcastle based newborn photography studio, I work with your baby and take a calm, unhurried approach. Sessions during this early window allow me to follow your baby's lead completely, leaving plenty of time for feeding, settling, cuddling without any rush. The results are those quiet, timeless images that genuinely don't date.
That said, life isn't always tidy. If your baby arrives a little earlier or later than expected, or if circumstances mean your session needs to happen closer to three weeks, please don't panic. Every baby is different, I always do my very best to work with whatever stage your little one is at. Sessions up to around three to four weeks can still produce beautiful results, though we may work with your baby awake rather than fully settled.
When Should I Book My Newborn Session?
My honest recommendation is to get in touch around the time of your twenty-week scan. That feels like a natural milestone , you've had the all-clear, you're starting to feel more settled in the pregnancy and your due date is confirmed.
As a North East newborn photographer, my diary fills up several months in advance. I take a limited number of sessions each month deliberately, because I want every family to have my full time and attention. Booking early simply gives you the best chance of securing your preferred month.
I fully understand that booking before your baby has even arrived can feel strange. What I offer is a due-date based system, which means I provisionally hold the weeks around your estimated due date rather than asking you to commit to a fixed date right now. Once your baby arrives, you get in touch and we finalise everything around your baby's age and your recovery.
It takes the pressure off completely. You're not committing to a specific day six months from now — you're just securing your place in the diary so that when the time comes, everything is already in place.

What happens if my baby arrives early or late?
Babies have their own plans. After years of working with families across Newcastle upon Tyne and the wider North East, I can tell you that very few babies arrive exactly on their due date.
If your baby comes early, please get in touch as soon as you feel ready. I'll do everything I can to accommodate you, and in most cases we can make it work beautifully. If your baby is late, the same applies - a few extra days or even a week beyond your due date doesn't change anything, and I'll simply adjust your session to suit.
The only thing I'd gently ask is that you keep me updated. A quick message once you're home and settled, means I can hold that space for you with confidence. You don't need to have everything together - just reach out when you can.
Can I book after my baby is born?
Yes, and please do get in touch even if you've only just had your baby.
I do occasionally have last-minute spaces, and if your little one is still within that ideal early window, there may well be something I can do.
What does change after around three weeks is the session itself. Babies who are a little older are often more awake, more alert, and less inclined to curl or settle into sleepy poses. This isn't a problem , it simply means we approach the session differently, focusing on natural awake shots, connection between you, and the more interactive moments rather than deeply settled poses.
Some families find they prefer this style, actually. And there's nothing wrong with that. The important thing is that you have beautiful images of this time, whatever stage your baby is at when we meet.
If your baby is already a few weeks old and you're worried you've missed the window for newborn photography, please still get in touch. I'd rather have an honest conversation and find something that works than have you feel like you've missed out altogether.
What makes my Newborn studio different?
My studio is based in a calm, private home setting, that matters more than you might expect when you're a few days postpartum and navigating your first outings with a newborn.
I work exclusively with a timeless palette of whites, creams, and soft textures. There are no bright props, no themed sets, nothing that dates the images or pulls focus from your baby.
What I'm creating is something that should feel as beautiful in twenty years as it does the day you receive it.
Every session is all-inclusive. You won't be sitting in front of a screen choosing your favourites from hundreds of images and doing mental arithmetic about what you can afford. Instead, you'll receive a curated gallery of 25 or more fully edited images in both colour and black and white, beautifully packaged and ready to print or display. The pricing is clear from the start.
Sessions typically last two to three hours, though I never rush. If your baby needs an extended feed, or you need time to settle, we simply take it. There's no clock-watching here.
For families across Newcastle, Wallsend, Whitley Bay, and the wider North East, I offer newborn and family photography that feels genuinely personal rather than production-line.
Your session is about your family, your baby, this very particular moment in time.

FAQ
How far in advance should I book my newborn session With Emma McDonald Photography?
How far in advance should I book my newborn session in Newcastle?
I'd recommend getting in touch around your twenty-week scan, or as soon as you feel ready after that. My diary fills several months ahead, so earlier is always better. That said, if you're further along or have already had your baby, please still reach out — I'll always do my best to help.
What if my baby doesn't sleep during the session?
It happens, and it's completely fine. Newborn sessions are built around your baby's needs, not the other way around. We take breaks for feeds, nappy changes, and cuddles as often as needed. A settled, comfortable baby always produces the most beautiful images, so there's never any rush.
Is the studio suitable for a c-section recovery?
Absolutely. My studio is on the ground floor with easy parking. Sessions are relaxed and slow-paced, with comfortable seating for you throughout. Many of my families come to me following a c-section, and I always make sure the experience is as easy and comfortable as possible.
Do I need to prepare anything before the session?
Very little. I'll send you a full guide once you're booked, but the main things are to feed your baby just before you arrive, keep them in a loose sleepsuit for easy undressing, and bring anything that helps them settle — a dummy, a familiar blanket, or simply yourself. You don't need to bring outfits or props; everything in the studio is provided.
Can siblings or pets be included in the session?
Siblings are very welcome and make for some of the most heartfelt images of the whole session. I'd recommend bringing them along for the first part and having another adult with you to take them home once we've captured those moments together. Pets can also make a wonderful appearance , just let me know in advance so we can plan accordingly.
