A guide to getting ready for baby by Emma McDonald Photography

Welcoming a new baby into the world is an extraordinary experience, and as a newborn photographer based in Newcastle, I’ve had the privilege of capturing countless precious moments for families starting this wonderful journey. Preparing for the birth of your baby can feel overwhelming, but with the right guidance, it can also be an exciting and empowering process. Here, I’ve put together some tips to help you prepare for the arrival of your little one in the UK.

1. Antenatal Care and Classes

The UK’s National Health Service (NHS) provides comprehensive antenatal care, including regular check-ups and scans. Make sure you attend all your appointments to monitor your baby’s growth and ensure a healthy pregnancy.

Consider joining antenatal classes, which are often available through the NHS or private providers. These classes cover everything from labour and delivery to breastfeeding and newborn care, helping you feel more confident about what’s to come whilst also helping you create a supportive network of friends.

2. Packing Your Hospital Bag

Having your hospital bag ready by 36 weeks is a must. Essential items include:

  • For Mum: Comfortable clothes, maternity pads, toiletries, and snacks.
  • For Baby: Newborn nappies, vests, sleepsuits, a blanket, and a going-home outfit.
  • Important Documents: Your maternity notes and any birth plan you’ve prepared.

3. Creating a Birth Plan

A birth plan outlines your preferences for labour and delivery, such as pain relief options, birthing positions, and who you want with you during the birth.

Discuss your birth plan with your midwife, but remember to stay flexible—birth can be unpredictable.

4. Choosing Your Birthplace

In the UK, you can give birth in a hospital, midwife-led unit, or at home, depending on your preferences and medical history.

Newcastle is home to excellent maternity facilities, including the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) and Cramlington Maternity Unit. The RVI offers a state-of-the-art maternity ward with a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), while the Cramlington Maternity Unit is known for its modern facilities and dedicated midwifery care. Cramlington Maternity Unit also allows your birthing partner to stay with you for the entirety of your stay - this includes after baby is born.

Visit your chosen birthplace beforehand to familiarise yourself with the environment.

5. Preparing Your Home for Baby

Before your baby arrives, set up space for baby to sleep, such as a crib or Moses basket ( But let's be Honest, do Newborns even sleep at night?) .

Stock up on essentials like nappies, wipes, and baby clothes. Always wash baby clothes and bedding in non-bio detergent to protect their sensitive skin.

6. Looking After Yourself

Pregnancy and childbirth can be physically and emotionally demanding. Prioritise self-care by eating a balanced diet, staying active with pregnancy-safe exercises, and taking time to relax. Don’t hesitate to seek support from your partner, family, or friends.

7. Capturing Your Baby’s First Moments

Your baby’s early days are fleeting, and capturing these moments can create lasting memories. At Emma McDonald Photography, I specialise in timeless newborn photography with a pure, minimalist style. My studio in Newcastle is designed to provide a calm and comfortable environment for both you and your baby.

Booking your newborn photography session during your pregnancy ensures you’ll secure a spot during those precious first two weeks when babies are at their sleepiest. I’ll guide you through the entire process, making it stress-free and enjoyable.

Always best to book before baby is born - Most new parents book their newborn session around 24- 27 weeks pregnant.
